Everyone can recognize bad design. Even if you have no concept of what makes it bad, It’s really easy to notice when something’s just not quite right. And of course we’re all our own worst critics. If your website is giving you major cringe, take these steps to get to a better, happier place with your website.

Number one map and messaging.

You can’t recover from bad or unhelpful copy. The best way to combat this issue is to get really clear about the flow that your ideal client should be taking on your website.

As an entrepreneur, I’m sure you’ve heard of funnels by now, but this concept really does help take your user from general idea, to more specific idea, to call to action.

If you offer multiple products or services, be super clear about that! Niche down your website and provide a menu for people to choose from to learn specifically about what’s relevant to them. A little blurb here and there to guide people to their correct selection is an awesome way to create clarity and functionality. Make sure that there is a call to action on each page!

Step two colors and fonts.

Part of what creates cringe for people on their website is disharmony. Does your brand have dedicated fonts and colors? Be super vigilant about anything that sticks out like a sore thumb. Everything should be cohesive. If something is not quite right, then go in and change it! And if your brand doesn’t have a curated selection of fonts and colors, check out canvas or Etsy for templates. If you’re looking for a more dramatic overhaul, or you’re ready for even some professional help, I recommend using Nerdette Designs. She's been my go to for design and branding for the past five years across multiple ventures. I can’t recommend her enough.

Step three inventory your images.

Most business owners have a collection of content whether they realize it or not. Reusing images, using outdated images, or using strange or dark photos is a great way to create cringe on your website.

If your customer is going from page to page and seeing the same pictures over and over again, they’re going to start to wonder why there’s only a couple photos and begin to think that maybe you’re not as professional as your copy would lead them to believe.
